The current-generation XC90 has changed from the original in every way and is lighter than the previous edition despite being about the same size. The interior's design theme includes natural-wood inlays, supple leather seats and trim and a classy crystal glass shift lever.

The T6 model uses a supercharged and turbocharged "Drive-E" four-cylinder. It uses the turbo for top-end power and the belt-driven supercharger to help out at lower engine revs. Added for 2017 is the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid that adds an electric motor to the gas engine. That increases the net output to 400 horsepower and allows the XC90 to travel up to 25 miles on electric power alone. It also gets 53 mpg in the city and 54 on the highway.

The T6 and T8 hybrid use eight-speed automatic transmissions. Although all-wheel-drive is standard, the T8's electric motor powers the rear wheels without employing a conventional driveline.

Available XC90 options let you add more active safety content.
