WASHINGTON ? Volvo Cars of North America is recalling 584 2016 Volvo XC90 SUVs because of a problem that may disable the front-seat side-impact airbag, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The affected vehicles have front seats whose wiring harness for the side-impact protection system may have been routed incorrectly," said NHTSA in its recall summary.

"If the wiring harness is routed incorrectly, the wiring may be damaged, disabling the front-seat side-impact airbag and increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the airbag."

A Volvo spokesman did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking if there are any injuries, crashes or fatalities linked to the recall.

The problem is attributed to incorrect assembly at the supplier.

The affected XC90s were built from January 27, 2015 to May 19, 2015.

Volvo dealers will inspect the routing of the wiring, correcting the routing and installing a protective sleeve. The recall is expected to begin in July. Owners can contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552.
