The Acura brand name offered up plenty of promise about a decade ago and it had the potential to take on some of the bigger players in the premium market. Over the years the brand has managed to lose some of the steam and this is a bit of a shame when you take into consideration the growth in the premium crossover/SUV market.

The premium division of Honda has now come back and one of the first of the vehicles comes from Acura Precision Concept design that is the 2017 Acura MDX and it is going to take on the Audi, Mercedes and BMW.

However this isn?t the only vehicle that is making a comeback as the 2016 Volvo XC90 has now set the bar for upmarket SUVs from alternative car makers and it came about thanks to an $11 billion investment that was break and make.

It is going to be very interesting to find out if the premium dark horse that is the Acura is going to stand up against one of the best in the segment.

The XC90 does offer up a design that is conservative and it?s a sober looking vehicle but it does offer up plenty of sophistication. On the exterior one of the highlights is going to be the headlights, which have been said to be like Thors hammer. The cabin however is packed with plenty of plush materials along with some wood trims.

The Acura offers up the V6 3.5 litre engine and this offers up 290 horses and has the nine speed automatic gearing which comes in AWD or FWD. There is the Sport Hybrid which has 325 horses with 7 speed dual clutch and this gives out 26mpg.

This is good fuel economy figures when you take into account that the plug-in hybrid Volvo T8 has attained the same overall rating. The MDX does get beaten for the power with the XC90 offering 316 horses and 295 torque and the TS offers 400 horses along with 472 torque.
