In an unusual move to tease an upcoming concept car, Volvo has used Snapchat to give the world a glimpse of its upcoming compact premium models riding on the new compact modular architecture. Slotting under the next-generation XC60, the XC40 will be Volvo?s answer to the likes of the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Audi Q3. The teasers below preview Volvo?s new 40-series cars, which will include the XC40 crossover as well as the S40 sedan and V40 wagon.

The three teaser images don?t reveal much, but they are likely showing the XC40 crossover. The first teaser shows part of the lower front fascia with an LED light strip embedded inside the blacked-out air intake. Body cladding can also be seen peeking out to the side just before the wheel wells. The second teaser shows the entire front end of a 40-series car from a distance while also demonstrating some of the model?s future tech capabilities. In the third teaser, notice a large radiator grille flanked by headlights featuring the automaker?s signature Thor?s Hammer LED lights. The front ends of these vehicles clearly show off a family resemblance to the larger XC90.

Volvo?s 40-series cars will ride on the CMA platform, which was co-developed with parent company Geely. Like the SPA platform that underpins the 90 Series and the upcoming 60 Series, the CMA platform is modular and is versatile enough to be used on multiple body styles. Expect Volvo?s Drive-E engine family to power the next-generation 40 Series and look for a possible new front-drive hybrid powertrain with a dual-clutch gearbox to make its debut. All 40 Series models will also be made available in the U.S., and will serve as the Swedish automaker?s entry-level vehicles.
