Consumers would never be wanting when it comes to looking for vehicles with high output, so trying to differentiate one from the other based on higher horses alone isn?t really going to be too effective.

But creativity goes a long way for Volvo. The Swedes have found a tongue-in-cheek way of promoting the extra power that can be gotten from the twin engine setup in the 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) through what looks like a realistic video ad.

The PHEV variant of the SUV generates a system total of 400hp and 427lb-ft torque, which is significantly higher than the 316hp and 295lb-ft torque its top-trim T6 gas powered version does.

In the 2-minute spot, the automaker?s best-selling SUV is seen parked on the side of the highway and derives its plug-in electrical energy from passing vehicles on the road, with a digital signboard thanking each vehicle for helping to fill it up according to their brand.

What catches the attention of the passing cars is a sign that says ?Highway Robbery?, which implies that the XC90 PHEV steals energy from them. According to the concept outlined in the video, it sort of uses wasted energy from other vehicles ? it?s not really stealing, is it?

But hey, it?s a good marketing trick. And it seems to be more interesting than a lot of the other ads we?ve seen from other automakers.
