Volvo's 2016 XC90 (Car of the Year winner in our first-ever Roadshow Shift Awards) is an impressive machine. But that sort of quality costs some decent coin. Thankfully, Volvo's rolling out a new trim level that'll make its new ute slightly more affordable.

The new XC90 T5 Momentum costs just $43,950 -- nearly $6,000 less than the previous base model, the T6 Momentum. However, you will have to make some sacrifices. All-wheel drive becomes an option, with standard front-wheel drive instead. You also lose the turbocharged-and-supercharged T6 engine in favor of a turbocharged four-cylinder. On top of that, you lose the third row, as well -- the T5 seats just five.

But there's a benefit beyond the lower cost of entry -- fuel economy! Whereas the T6 achieves 20 mpg city and 25 highway, the T5 FWD will net 22 mpg city and 26 highway (subtract 1 mpg highway for AWD, a $2,000 option on the T5). Volvo's website still says the T5 could achieve up to 30 mpg highway, but the feds beg to differ.
